The festive season is upon us (whether we like it or not!) and as it is typically a time for showing goodwill to those around us and those in need, I thought it was the perfect time to reflect on the support that Gattaca employees have given to local communities and charities over the past year.
Helping good causes has always been part of the culture at Gattaca and I’m pleased to say that our teams continue to come up with initiatives which help to do this. Our dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee, made up of employees from across the business, ensures that we have a full calendar of events throughout the year which raise awareness and funds for a number of issues close to our hearts.
Here are a few highlights from 2016:
10 years Friends of PICU
Friends of PICU is a charity which supports the paediatric intensive care unit in Southampton and this year the charity celebrated its 10th anniversary – a fantastic achievement for a local, independent charity. The celebrations culminated in a party earlier this month, sponsored by our engineering recruitment business Matchtech.
I’m proud to say that we have supported the charity since its inception, raising a total of £119,000 through charity golf days, charity balls and raffles, amongst other fundraising activities. The support we have been able to provide Friends of PICU has helped them to purchase two specialist paediatric ambulances and a portable ventilator amongst other vital equipment. Our Whiteley office in Hampshire will continue to partner with Friends of PICU in the new year to help support critically ill children and their families in the South Coast.
Three cheers for Three Peaks
As a recruitment business, we’re used to peaks and troughs in our clients’ staffing requirements. We’re not quite as familiar with the peaks and troughs of the highest mountains in the UK! But, in May, more than 50 Gattaca employees from across the UK gave up their weekend to take part in the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the highest mountains in each of Scotland, England and Wales in under 24 hours. Several other employees took on the equally challenging task of driving their hiking colleagues between all of the peaks, and safely bringing them back home. True teamwork!
Throughout the training preparations our staff rallied together to obtain sponsorship from friends, family, clients and candidates. After completing the challenge, the team managed to raise an incredible total of more than £16,000, which was split between four important charities -Cardiomyopathy, Trinity Winchester, Cancer Research UK and WaterAid.
Cakes, coffee, raffles and running
Following our rebrand in July, the first charity event we took part in as Gattaca was the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge in London – the very same week we ‘went live’ with the new brand! I ran alongside 85 of our employees to complete the 5.3km run in Battersea Park on a sunny Thursday afternoon. More than just a run in the park, the event raised awareness and funds for Age UK.
To balance out all that exercise, we have more recently ‘run’ a coffee and cake morning in aid of Macmillan. I was fortunate enough to be the judge of several amazing cakes in our head office and I am proud to say our cake-loving colleagues across our 3 UK offices managed to raise over £860 for the cancer support charity.
On a smaller scale, we regularly hold raffles in support of local and national charities and as a group, we support each other in our individual endeavours to raise awareness and funds for causes close to our hearts.
These are just a few examples of our commitment to CSR. Looking ahead to 2017, we will strive to expand our CSR reach into all of the international regions in which we operate. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who sponsored our Three Peaks challengers and anyone who has participated in our charity events over this year. We look forward to another year full of charitable endeavours in 2017!
